The DePaul University Library is an active participant and partner with faculty in building the future of scholarly communication. Through its institutional repository,
Digital Commons@DePaul (formerly Via Sapientiae), the DePaul University Library supports DePaul's goal of academic enhancement by collecting, organizing, and providing open access to scholarly works produced by the University's faculty, staff, centers and institutes, and students. The repository also showcases DePaul's unique
Vincentian heritage materials.

Use
SelectedWorks to combine your scholarly work, biographical information, and professional summary into one profile. It works much like a social media account and is yours to develop. Benefits include a permanent URL, search engine optimization to promote your work in search engine results, and access to monthly reports to track downloads. You can make materials available for download, or point to your research posted in outside journals and databases. SelectedWorks is fully integrated with
Digital Commons@DePaul.
Create an account and follow the
SelectedWorks Guide for Authors to build your profile.
Publisher Agreements
Typically, publishers allow authors to preserve their scholarly works in their university's institutional repository, like Digital Commons@DePaul. However, this is not always the case. The best place to find out what your publishers allow is by consulting your publisher directly, but the online SHERPA/RoMEO database can often provide the most convenient way to determine a publisher’s policies on copyright and archiving.
Alternatives for Restricted Copyrighted Works
If your publisher will not allow inclusion of your works in DePaul's institutional repository, there are alternatives:
-
You may be able to publish a pre-print or post-print version of the work
- You can include citation information (descriptive metadata including title, author, abstract, etc.) only and link to the proprietary database holding the work
-
You can include just the citation information without any links
Open Educational Resources
Open educational resources (OERs) are educational materials available at no cost and include legal permission to freely use, share, and build upon the content. OERs give educators the ability to adapt instructional resources to the individual needs of their students, to ensure that resources are up-to-date, and ensure that cost is not a barrier to accessing high-quality, standards-aligned resources.
DePaul University is a member of the Open Textbook Network. Please contact your liaison for more information on how you can incorporate open textbooks into your syllabus.
